Inovo/Ecosmart Garden - Living Outside the Ordinary
Caroline Wesseling was commissioned, by Inovo and Ecosmart Real Fires, to design the ultimate urban courtyard garden paradise, in the form of an outdoor bathroom for The Auckland Flower Show 2008.
This year’s theme is Urban Paradise. The outdoor bathroom redefines the traditional bathroom transforming it into an enclosed garden paradise evoking a sense of sanctuary, luxury and serenity.
The garden has been cleverly designed as a permeable ‘green’ space, with emphasis on a sense of wellbeing and seclusion; using lush relaxing planting and warm colours. Fire and water are an integral part of the overall relaxed atmosphere. This courtyard garden is serenity in stone, fire and water, a space to come home to, freshen up, relax and unwind.
In creating this urban paradise Caroline endeavors to create a lush green environment as a sanctuary from our busy lives. After a hard days work, when there is little time to left in our day, to come home to luxurious bathing before bed is to live truly, ‘Outside the Ordinary’.

The Ecosmart Fire Towers, add ambience and drama heightening the senses with their lively dancing flames. These fires are portable, simple, clean burning and environmentally friendly. Well suited to this enclosed outdoor bathroom they are utterly versatile, suitable also for indoor use. The garden courtyard is an extension of the house providing openness to the outdoors, but also the intimacy required for one of the most personal spaces in our homes, the bathroom.
Caroline’s use of lush planting, open flames and intimate lighting deftly engulf the user, providing the warmth and coziness required to relax and enjoy this unique outdoor garden experience.
What also makes this garden unique is the use of easy care, low maintenance James Hardie products cleverly put together to clad the walls of the garden creating highlights and accents to provide textural interest and colour to the garden. 
The Axon panels, with its subtle vertical lines and the Linear Weather Board, with its traditional Kiwi style, remind you that you are in fact outside. Its deep shadow lines are picked up by the flickering flames of the Fire Towers.
The use of the new Hardi Glaze, especially for bathrooms, adds vibrant colour to enrich the bathroom experience.
Small outdoor spaces can often be difficult to pave without creating drainage problems for the garden. Caroline uses industrial grating instead of non-permeable traditional paving, providing a low maintenance, permeable, free draining surface for the garden.
Excess water can flow directly back into the garden at the same time adding a bit of urban, modern, flare and contrasting well with the lush planting.If you love gardens and you love luxury you’ll love this urban oasis.
